09/14/08 Deacon Board Meeting

Deacon Board Meeting

09/14/08

2pm-5pm

Present: Pastor Wang, Pastor Don, Flora Chen, Cerina Chu, Mengpei Hu, Mary Bush, Sandy Ting, Albert Pang, Mike Lei

I.                   Devotions

Mark 4:35-41. How to deal with storms? Sometimes storms inside are bigger than the storms outside. Let God calm the storm inside. Storms can come when we don’t treat Jesus as Lord. Don’t treat Jesus like a cargo on a ship and put him in the back of the boat. Have faith to see Jesus as who He really is – Lord and God. Learn lesson of faith not to be afraid after the storm and not be afraid of the Lord. God gives us opportunity to know Him better. We may seem to obey the Lord, but not treat Christ as Lord. Jesus wants them to experience the storm. He planned it for us. God is always working. God wants us to cry out to Him, but with the right attitude towards Him. Every storm has God’s grace. God is always there during the storm. God is waiting for us on the boat. But, people are being held back by the things of the world. We forget about God during the storm.

II.                Past Minutes

-The board approved the minutes from last month.

III.             Financial Report

-Each department head should look at their department financial report.

-We will have a policy that the department head need to sign the reimbursement form. If it’s a big number, then the deacon board chairperson needs to sign it also.

-We should submit reimbursements for church related expenses.

-For next year, we want to simplify the bulletin to be only 2 pages (front and back). The rest of the information will be on the web.

IV.             General Affairs

-Pray for brother or sister to take care of General Affairs.

-Albert will write job description for General Affairs.

-Albert will ask different brothers to help right now.

-Ask Mike to pray about this department.

V.                Pastor Don’s report

-Issue raised- Lisa wants to join the youth group. Few children come on Friday night. We had previous experienced to move 6th grader to the youth. Youths are not positive about this move. Their feedback is that bringing in people from that age group is premature. We have learned the lessons in the past.

-Board suggestion: Pastor Wang and Pastor Don to visit Lisa’s parents. 1) We will add another female teacher on Friday night. 2) Ask Albert to invite Michael and Winnie to come and bring their children.

-Youth ministry needs- Still lacking female coworkers to be a mature female presence for youth ministry. For now, encourage Kirsten to take a more active role in the small group and during Friday nights.

VI.             Pastor Wang’s report

-Initial plan is to have brothers and sisters fellowship at Pastor Wang and Jeff Su’s house in November.

VII.          Bilingual children teaching material

-We will have further discussion. There’s concern that this may not fit Sunday school setting. It may be used for supplement for Church Chinese School.

-Suggest Albert to have a meeting with the children teachers to discuss this material.
